It has not been a pleasant European campaign for Tottenham. First, Spurs bowed out of the Champions League group stage after finishing third behind Monaco and Bayer Leverkusen. Some figured that this could be a strategy orchestrated by Mauricio Pochettino in order to drop down into the Europa League; after all, under Unai Emery, Sevilla did that three times and went on to win it.
However, if it was a gamble, it backfired miserably. Spurs were shocked by Gent and now will have to re-focus on domestic affairs for the rest of the season. Champions League football is not guaranteed, as they have Arsenal, Liverpool, and Manchester United hot on their tails. Barring a shocking collapse by Chelsea, the title race appears to be over, so the best Tottenham can likely hope for is to finish in second. They sit just two points behind Manchester City and could temporarily overtake the Sky Blues with a victory against Stoke today.
In terms of personnel, Tottenham will have to make do without Erik Lamela due to a hip problem, whilst Danny Rose has still not recovered from a knee injury.
Stoke City
As for Stoke, they sit in the top half of the table with 32 points. Xherdan Shaqiri is set to make his long awaited return after missing out on the past couple of games due to a calf problem, whilst Wilfried Bony and Phil Bardsley should also return to action as well. They come into this game having earned a hard-fought 1-0 win over Crystal Palace to end a three game winless streak, and this match could see the introduction of new signing Saido Berahino, who has not played since being brought in from West Brom last month.
