In the build-up to Arsenal’s clash with Sutton United in the FA Cup, there were two hot topics: the Gunners’ form and the opposition’s eye-catching goalkeeper.
Wayne Shaw, Sutton’s second-choice custodian, became a popular figure prior to the game due to a number of reasons, his size being a big one. The goalkeeper now finds himself in hot water after a stunt he pulled during the FA Cup tie.
Shaw was caught on camera eating a pie, as the home side trailed the north London outfit 2-0. This came after the player had already visited a pub where local fans were during half-time.
His decision to gulf down pasty in the dugout has led to the opening of an investigation by the Gambling Commission. The reason: a betting sponsor was offering 8-1 odds for Shaw to munch on a pie on camera.
In regards with betting, FA rules are clear: players are not allowed to bet or give insider information obtained by being a part of the game. As a result, Gambling Commission enforcement and intelligence director Richard Watson said (as per the Mirror): “Integrity in sport is not a joke and we have opened an investigation to establish exactly what happened.”
However, Shaw argued his innocence. Speaking on Good Morning Britain, the 45-year-old insisted that neither he nor his team-mates were involved in the betting.
“A few of the lads said to me earlier on: 'What is going on with the 8-1 about eating a pie? I said: 'I don't know, I've eaten nothing all day, so I might give it a go later on,'" Shaw admitted after the game.
“As I say what is that, Sun Bets had us at 8-1 to eat a pie. I thought I would give them a bit of banter and let's do it. All the subs were on and we were 2-0 down."
