Atletico Madrid are preparing for a crucial Champions League clash on Tuesday. The Spanish giants look to do one better than last season’s achievement by actually winning the title, but will have to get past Bayer Leverkusen first.
Los Rojiblancos drew the Bundesliga outfit in a repeat of their 2015 round of 16 clash, but Diego Simeone’s side wo;; be sweating over the fitness of one key player. That is Jan Oblak, the excellent shot-stopper who has been on the sidelines since December.
However, the Argentine manager had some good news for the Madrid giants: their hot-shot goalie could make Tuesday’s game. Oblak was named in the squad for the trip to Germany, but will require late tests to determine his fitness.
“We will see on Tuesday if Jan Oblak is fit to start,” Simeone revealed in a press conference, as per the Daily Mail.
“We will watch him in training. After that we will decide who plays and who does not.
“The doctors discharged him and he began training with us. Now he is challenging Miguel [Moya] and Andre [Moreira].”
Los Rojiblancos will need their custodian. Atletico Madrid will be tasked with stopping in-form forward Javier Hernandez. After going 16 goals without scoring, the Mexican forward has now found the back of the net five times in his last three outings to take his tally to 12 in 27 games this season.
