Match facts

  • This will be the fifth UEFA Champions League match between these teams. So far, Bayer Leverkusen has won once, with three draws. Atlético may have defeated the German team after a penalty shootout, but that game counts as a draw.

  • Hakan Calhanoglu, Omer Toprak & Stefan Kiessling missed their penalties during the last time these sides met in the competition, giving Los Colchoneros the win.

  • "Chicharito" would unadvertedly "avenge" his would-be team weeks later, as he scored the game-winning goal for Real Madrid that eliminated Atlético in the 2014-2015 UCL edition.

The Mexican striker knows how to damage Los Colchoneros.

Team news

Bayer Leverkusen will have to face this game without three players: Hakan Calhanoglu, Jonathan Tah and Lars Bender. While Tah and Bender are out due to injuries, Calhanoglu has been banned for the rest of the season over a contract dispute with one of his former clubs.

On the other side of the pitch, coach Diego Simeone will also have to deal with three certain injury absences: Tiago, Juanfran and Augusto Fernández. Goalkeeper Jan Oblak has returned after a long spell on the sidelines, but Simeone may want to keep Miguel Angel Moyá between the sticks and give his stellar goalie one more week to recover.
