It seems that Cristiano Ronaldo will have to wait one more week to celebrate his birthday on the pitch, as the Major of Vigo has decided to postpone the game between Celta and Real Madrid.
Extreme weather conditions have damaged the stadium's structure, causing a portion of the roof to fall. Firemen and security experts have worked all night long to try and fix this situation, but their attempts to do so have failed, forcing the Mayor to delay the game until a further date.
Mayor Abel Caballero had a busy weekend, as the extreme weather conditions also forced local authorities to suspend the game between Deportivo and Betis, which was supposed to take place on Friday.
Regarding Sunday's match, Caballero admitted that this decision was taken to prevent a tragedy.
"I have spoken to Celta0s president. The firemen could not fix it. The pitch is not fit for purpose and we are prioritizing security. In these conditions, the match cannot go ahead," Caballero revealed.
A portion of the roof came off at Balaídos Stadium after extreme wind conditions hit the city of Vigo.
Match could be postponed until mid-May
Given both teams' busy schedules, there is no place to play this game in the calendar as it stands now, since both clubs are involved in International competitions.
Celta has the Copa del Rey semi-final this week, followed next week by their UEFA Europa League matchup against Shakhtar. On the other hand, Real Madrid has their UEFA Champions League tie against Napoli next March, with mid-week matches expanding for the rest of the season if they keep on going.
All in all, the game could be postponed until mid-May, if both teams make it to the later stages of their continental competitions.
