  • Bancé has scored in each of the last three AFCON tournaments (2013, 2015 & 2017)

  • The first time, they ended up losing on penalties to DR Congo on penalties in 1998
  • Ghana are featuring in an AFCON third place play-off for the fourth time in their last six appearances in the tournament (2008, 2012 & 2013)

Ghana vs. Burkina Faso - A re-match of the 2013 AFCON semi-final

As this is the third-placed match, naturally, both Ghana and Burkina Faso will be coming into this consolation tie bitterly disappointed. The Black Stars failed to achieve their goal of reaching the final as they were defeated 2-0 by Cameroon, whilst the Stallions saw their finals dream end after a tense penalty shoot-out.

It goes without saying that the third placed match is one that no team really wants to play, but there is also a chance at winning some personal silverware for several players who will be featuring in this game. Burkina Faso's Aristide Bancé and Préjuce Nakoulma, as well as Black Stars ace Andre Ayew are in contention for the top-scorer prize, as each has netted twice. Should Ayew manage to add to his total and others like Egypt's Mohamed Salah not surpass his output, it will make the second straight tournament that Ayew has clinched the coveted award.

There will also be of course an element of revenge for Ghana, as Burkina Faso denied them a chance to featuring in the AFCON 2013 final after beating them on spot-kicks.
