Here are the top 10 richest football clubs in the world, as revealed by the Deloitte Football Money League.

For the 20th year running, the Deloitte Football Money League study has provided a list of the world's richest football teams, the latest being the 2015/16 season. Eight English clubs appear in the top 20, and 12 in the top 20. The appearance of a high number of Premier League clubs in the list is as a result of the new £8.3bn TV deal for the 2016/17 season.

Real Madrid, who had set camp at the top of the list for 11 years, were dethroned to third by their bitter rivals Barcelona, who secured the second spot. Manchester City came fifth on the list, an all-time high for the club, while Premier League defending champions Leicester City made it to the top 20 for the first time in their history after winning their first-ever Premier League title last season.

According to the research, Man Utd's £75m-a-year kit deal with Adidas, the biggest kit deal in the world, and their return to the 2015/16 Champions League, played a huge role in the revenue increase. “We’re thinking it’s going to be a real tight-run thing between United, Real Madrid and Barcelona,” Dan Jones of Deloitte’s Sports Business Group told City A.M.

“There are three or four factors at work. One is domestic TV, where United will gain from the Premier League TV deals but Spain are doing good things as well.

“You’ve got Champions League performance, which is hugely important. Then you’ve got the commercial side, and that has been the real engine of growth for United over the last few years.

"They’ve done a tremendous job, but teams like Barcelona and Real Madrid are now out in the market and saying to sponsors ‘if United are worth that, we’re worth that’.

“I do think it’s going to be very close. The final factor that’s beyond Manchester United’s control is what happens with the exchange rate.”
