It seems the Memphis Depay and Man United love story was destined for a sad end.

Memphis Depay is on the verge of leaving Manchester United before the January transfer window slams shut, the Daily Mirror understands. The Dutchman joined the red devils in the summer of 2015 from Dutch side PSV Eindhoven, where he had scored 39 goals in 90 league appearances, and was widely seen as one of the most promising talents in Europe.

At Man Utd, he failed to impress under Dutch manager Louis Van Gaal, and things got worse under the new manager Jose Mourinho. The 22 year old has only scored two goals in 33 league appearances since moving to Old Trafford, and the club is said to be keen on selling him.Memphis DepayFrench giants Lyon, surprisingly, lead the race to sign him. The Mirror understands that the Ligue 1 outfit submitted an initial bid of £13 million for the youngster, but was rejected.

But they are believed to have returned with an improved offer, which is, however, less than the £25 million the English giants paid PSV to being the starlet to Old Trafford two years ago.

Depay, who has only started in one match this season (EFL Cup against Northampton Town), has been allowed to leave the red devils. And with the transfer window almost getting shut in two weeks' time, the transfer to Lyon could be completed in 24 hours.
