From hero to zero? Not Sergio Ramos.

Real Madrid defender Sergio Ramos is well-known for his late goals but this team round, he put the ball in the wrong net. The Los Blancos captain scored an own goal for his former side Sevilla to hand the Madrid giants their first defeat in 40 matches since April 6, 2016.

It was quite unexpected that an own goal would end Zinedine Zidane's unbeaten streak but considering the fact that Sergio's late goals have rescued the Santiago Bernabeu outfit from the jaws of defeat countless times, he may as well get away with it. Moreover, statistics show that the former Sevilla man is the ultimate dead end at the heart of Real Madrid's defence.

The 30-year-old central defender has scored just two own goals in 685 matches in his professional career. The first own goal was against Man United in 2013 in the Champions League, and the second against Sevilla on Sunday, January 15, 2017. Ramos is still considered a hero, having contributed to Real Madrid's epic comeback last week against Sevilla in the Copa del Rey when they were 3-1 down and on the brink of losing their unbeaten run. Having shattered Barca's record of 39 matches unbeaten and set a new one of 40 this season, the defeat to Jorge Sampaoli's men shouldn't be that bitter for Real Madrid fans to swallow.

And to make things even better for Madridista's, they should be proud of the fact that their captain, despite being a defender, has scored more goals than Barcelona's midfield wizard Andres Iniesta. Here's how the two players compare to each other for their respective clubs since the year they joined.

Andres Iniesta at Barcelona (2002 to date)

  • 398 league games
  • 34 goals
  • 29 major trophies

Sergio Ramos at Real Madrid (2005 to date)

  • 348 league games
  • 46 goals
  • 13 major trophies

Total career goals

  • Ramos - 77
  • Iniesta - 72
