Leicester City and Chelsea...how one's fortunes can change in just one year

Leicester City

Simply put, this match couldn't possibly come at a worse time for Leicester City. The Foxes are currently in 15th place, having earned a very disappointing 21 points so far. Their title defense is over even before it started, and whilst they are not in the relegation zone, they are still way closer to it than anywhere near a Champions League berth.

Some cynics would say that that should be the natural order of things and that the Foxes' triumph last term was just a fluke. Regardless of whatever anyone thinks, the fact of the matter is, Claudio Ranieri's side have had a tough time this season. Although they're through to the round of 16 in the Champions League, they did benefit from having a pretty easy group in their debut European campaign.

Unfortunately, they have been "rewarded" with getting through by a tough foe - Sevilla - next month. But for now, Ranieri's focus surely will be on trying to keep his side as far away from the bottom three as possible and start working their way towards a more comfortable mid-table position as quickly as possible. Although the hosts don't have any notable injuries, they will be missing Riyad Mahrez, Islam Slimani and Daniel Amartey due to the AFCON tournament. As noted before, all three have been absolutely vital and have been directly involved in 15 out of Leicester's 24 goals this term.

Chelsea

Meanwhile, Chelsea will be coming into this game having experienced something they haven't experienced in quite some time. Earlier this month, Antonio Conte's side saw their impressive 13 match winning streak ended. In an interesting twist of fate, it was cross-town rivals Tottenham to snap Chelsea's perfect run and effectively blow the title race back open.

Last term, Chelsea, who ended up finishing in a very disappointing tenth spot, ended Spurs' title ambitions by holding them to a 2-2 draw, which thus handed the title to Leicester City, so surely, the win less than a fortnight ago must have been even sweeter for Tottenham supporters.

In any case, the gap between Chelsea and the chasing pack has been now reduced somewhat, but with Liverpool drawing, the Blues still enjoy a five point lead. Conte will be expecting his troops to get back on track and take advantage of the Foxes' struggles.

Their opponents will be even weaker due to the absence of key players as a result of AFCON and this naturally will represent an excellent opportunity for Chelsea to grab another three points - especially considering that Liverpool will face Manchester United in a tricky tie on Sunday afternoon.
