Match Facts & Stats

  • Chelsea have not been eliminated from the FA Cup at the third round stage since 1997-98, when they lost to 5-3 to Manchester United
  • Peterborough haven't beaten a top-flight side in the FA Cup since defeating Arsenal in the fourth round in 1965, losing 19 ties since
  • Chelsea have scored in all 39 FA Cup games that they have played at home since January 2000
  • The Blues have lost just one of their last 35 FA Cup home games against lower-league opposition
  • That was their shock 4-2 reversal to Bradford City back in the 2014/2015 term

Chelsea looking to pick themselves up and move on to the next round

It was bound to end at some point. Interestingly, Chelsea's winning streak started following a loss to a London rival, Arsenal, back in September. And it was yet another London rival, Tottenham, who denied the Blues a chance to make history by winning 14 straight games in one season. That also means that the Gunners' overall record of 14 games, which they achieved between February and August 2002 is still intact. Curiously enough, it was Chelsea who ended Tottenham's title challenge last season by holding them to a 2-2 draw, so Spurs' 2-0 win in a very entertaining game last week definitely must have been that much more sweet for Tottenham fans.

In any case, Antonio Conte's side don't have much time to mope over this result. Given the gulf in class between the two sides, the Italian tactican could opt to make some major changes in his starting XI. Kurt Zouma is expected to feature after missing out since last year following a knee injury in February. In fact, his entire starting XI is expected to look dramatically different than the one that featured against Tottenham, with players like Branislav Ivanovic and Michy Batshuayi given rare opportunities to feature from the start.

As for their upcoming opponents Peterborough United have shipped five goals during each of their last two meetings with Chelsea (5-1 back in 1965 and 5-0 in 2001), so they're expected to hunker down and try to absorb as much pressure as possible. Whilst they will try their utmost best to keep the score-line as low as possible, the Blues are obviously expected to come out on top here and move on to the next round.
