The 31-year-old striker scored his 249th goal for the Red Devils in their FA Cup clash with Reading.

Only one goal stands in the way of Wayne Rooney becoming Manchester United’s undisputed all-time top scorer. The English striker found the back of the net on Saturday, a strike which saw him move level with Red Devils legend Sir Bobby Charlton.

Rooney, once known as the Golden Boy, netted his 249th goal for the 20-time Premier League champions, a record Charlton solely held since 1973. Fast forward 44 years, and a man named Wayne shares that record.

The 31-year-old reached this feat during the FA Cup clash with Reading. The Three Lions captain needed only seven minutes to score, breaking the deadlock in Saturday’s game.

Rooney needed 543 games with Manchester United to reach this feat – that is 215 matches and four seasons fewer than what it took the 1966 World Cup winner. Wayne will break the record soon, having beaten Sir Bobby Charlton’s goalscoring record with England last year.

192 of those strikes came courtesy of the former Everton starlet’s preferred right foot, with 27 coming from the other.  He has scored 30 headers, five free-kicks, and 26 penalties en route to tying the all-time record.

Wayne’s favorite opponent is Aston Villa, having scored 14 times against them. His two favorite opponents that remain in the English top-flight, though, are Arsenal and their London neighbors West Ham.
