Team news – Arsenal to hand key players much-needed rest

As with most Premier League elites playing in the FA Cup’s early round, a mix of promising young players and first-team member will be chosen for the starting eleven. This clash between Arsenal and Preston North End will be no different.

Wenger announced that he will take this opportunity – a break from the demanding Premier League – to give star attack Alexis Sanchez a breather. The Chilean has been their best player this season, having scored 13 and assisted seven in the league.

Laurent Koscielny is another first-team ace set to be rested. In his place, Rob Holding will deputize, partnering Shkodran Mustafi. David Opsina should return to the lineup, but Francis Coquelin misses out through injury.

Other players sidelined for this game are Mesut Ozil (illness), Theo Walcott (calf) and Lucas Perez (ankle). They join long-term absentees Santi Cazorla (Achilles), Per Mertesacker and Kieran Gibbs (both knee), whilst Elneny is away for the African Cup of Nations.

This game could see the long-awaited return of Danny Welbeck. The Englishman returned to first-team training over the Christmas period, and could be in line for an appearance.
