Newcastle's Rafa Benitez hoping to overturn club's bad track record in FA Cup

Three times in ten years. That's the total amount of times the Magpies have progressed to the fourth round in the FA Cup in the past decade. It isn't exactly impressive reading for any club. But it is even more discouraging especially considering how Newcastle clinched this cup six times in the 20th century. They won it in 1910, 1924, 1932, 1951, 1952, and 1955, but a lot has changed for them since then.

Last season, Newcastle were relegated from the Premier League after finishing in 18th spot, and Benitez, who once managed Chelsea, Real Madrid, Liverpool, Valencia, and Napoli, has made it clear that his objective is to steer the Magpies back into the top flight for the 2017/2018 season. They presently sit in second spot in the Championship, so they do have a good shot, but for now, will have to have to hope to deal with a bad record that has seen them repeatedly fail to reach the last 16 time and time again.

The last time they won on the road was back in 2006, but they will be hoping to take advantage of a Birmingham side still adjusting to life under new manager Gianfranco Zola. The Italian, who will be well-known to much older Parma and Chelsea fans due to spells there in the 90's and early 2000's, was appointed manager of the struggling club last month and faces a tough task to turn things around during the second half of the current campaign.
