We take a look at some of the most hilarious football trolls and cartoons of 2016.

The year 2016 came with its own fair share of fun and bliss in the footballing world. These are moments that brought social media to a standstill and exposed the creativity of football fans across the world with hilarous memes and trolls. Here's a quick flashback to the moments that broke our ribs in 2016.

Neymar's suspicious pose

The year kicked off with the Ballon d'Or ceremony in January and at the event, Barcelona star Neymar was pictured looking at his Real Madrid counterpart Cristiano Ronaldo with a rather suspicious eye. This incident occured when the Portugal ace who has a solid history of changing women like soccer boots, was introduced to Lionel Messi's girlfriend. Neymar's trust game is so weak he appeared to be staring down into CR7's inner soul. But who would trust Cristiano Ronaldo around his girlfriend with all those abs and money?

The fall of Van Gaal

The ex-Man United boss fell off the top job at the club last summer but prior to that, he literally fell during the league match between Manchester United and Arsenal at Old Trafford. The Dutchman was protesting an alleged dive by Arsenal's Alexis Sanchez as the red devils cruised to a 3-2 win despite being out of form. The famous fall was the subject of hundreds of memes on the internet as shown below.

Real Madrid's lockeroom pose

Then there was the Real Madrid's post-clasico lockeroom photo that broke the internet almost halfway into the year. This was not actually a meme, but a pantless Cristiano Ronaldo, with his well-toned body, was the main highlight of the viral picture after the 2-1 win over rivals Barcelona who were enjoying a 39-match unbeaten run before losing it to their rivals.

Scared ronaldo

Then there was this photo of Cristiano Ronaldo during the Euro 2016 competition in France where Portugal were crowned Champions. The Seleccao captain appeared to be dogding a shot heading his way, but the cameraman captured exactly what internet trolls needed to make memes. Ronaldo Euro 2016 meme

Boateng's handball

Still at the European Championship in France, Jerome Boateng's handball during the Germany vs Italy match went viral. This was not your usual type of handball. It was a careless one to say the least -  and seems more like volleyball than football. For that, he's how the German defender got trolled.

Ronaldo's controversial recognition

There is no doubt that 2016 was a year of trophies for Cristiano Ronaldo at the European level. That is why many football fans were not surprised when he won his fourth Ballon d'Or. But some some critics believed that he was taking credit of the hardwork of other players, most notably during the Champions League and Euro 2016 finals. This viral cartoon by ZEZO Cartoons summed it all.

MSN's missed penalties

It came a time when the popular attacking trio of Messi, Suarez and Neymar were missing penalties in the Spanish league. On the other hand, their rival, Cristiano Ronaldo had a higher penalty-conversation rate, a topic that took football banter to a whole new level - cartoons!

Disgusted Sturridge

Then Liverpool's Daniel Sturridge pulled the mother of all facial expressions when Divock Origi was introduced ahead of him in the Spurs vs Liverpool game. Not so many people can express jealousy and disgust with a single facial expression. Sturridge is just among the few. He deserved an Oscar for that.

Zlatan - Lingard celebration

There was terror written all over Jesse Lingard's face when Zlatan Ibrahimovic leaped into the air to celebrate his goal vs West Brom at the Hawthorns. The viral image became a subject of memes on social media and some of them were too hilarious.

The 'cool' Cristiano Ronaldo

It seems CR7 was a hot topic for internet trolls in 2016, or he just knew how to get their attention. When he scored a hat-trick for Real Madrid vs Atletico Madrid in the Madrid derby in December, his 'cool pose' celebration went viral. Check out some of the best memes.
