Several exciting games happened over the weekend in Matchday 17 of the Premier League, with one highly-anticipated game – Everton vs. Liverpool – yet to happen at the time of writing this article. Big changes have occurred in the standings; huge statements have been made.
Here we take a look at the biggest talking point from the latest round of England’s top-flight football.
Wenger embarks on the blame game
It hasn’t been the best seven days for the Gunners. In one week, Arsenal drew Bayern Munich in the Champions League, lost twice in the Premier League, and thus dropped to 4th spot (déjà vu?).
And in both defeats, the north London outfit threw away a 1-0 led to lose 2-1 – against Everton and Man City. The latter came at the Etihad, with a superb first-half display from Alexis Sanchez and Co. being followed by an atrocious second half.
Although Wenger conceded that his boys underperformed on Sunday, he set out on a blame game, attacking the officiating and schedule of fixtures for the back-to-back losses. Le Prof was left fuming by the decision to award a foul in the build-up to Everton’s winning goal, then he said this (as per the Daily Mail) about the Etihad defeat:
“The two goals are offside, which is very difficult to accept in a game of that stature. Enough is enough for us because we got some bad decisions for the whole season and today I looked at the goals — both are offside.”
“I feel there were plenty of teams who don't play in Europe, big teams, who could have played on Tuesday and we could have played on Wednesday.
“It (the City defeat) is a bit the accumulation of the number of games we have played recently, particularly away from home.”
Liverpool now Chelsea’s closest rivals?
Well, almost. The Reds are in action on Monday, where they Everton, and will jump into second spot with victory over their neighbors. With Arsenal dropping to fourth, nine points behind Chelsea, the Blues must now worry about Liverpool.
Will Jurgen Klopp’s boys win, however? The numbers say yes, as the Anfield side are undefeated against the Toffees for just over six years. In fact, in the last 19 Merseyside Derbies, Liverpool have lost only once (in October 2010).
