Atletico Madrid’ recent results in La Liga have been mixed. After beating Malaga 4-2 in the league, Los Rojiblancos suffered back-to-back defeats, the latter of which won’t be forgotten.
Real Sociedad first triumphed over Diego Simeone’s boys 2-0 before Real Madrid thrashed them 3-0 at the Vicente Calderon thanks to a Cristiano Ronaldo hat-trick. A 3-0 win away to Osasuna soon followed, but then came a 0-0 draw with Espanyol.
This string of mixed results has left Atletico with 25 points, as Villarreal – only two points behind – look to leapfrog them, with that last Champions League qualifying spot within their reach.
Since Real Madrid, Barcelona, and Sevilla all played – and won over the weekend – Atletico trail the leaders by 12 points. They are behind the Blaugrana by six and Sevilla by five.
Fresh off their 1-0 defeat to Bayern Munich, Atletico will have a fit squad. With Koke, Carrasco, Griezmann, Gameiro all expected to start; the away side will be confident of winning.
