Spain’s tax authorities don’t play easy. After hunting down Barcelona trio Lionel Messi, Javier Mascherano, and Neymar – the latter’s case is ongoing – reports have emerged that an investigation has been launched into Cristiano Ronaldo.
El Confidencial and Football Leaks (as per Marca) claim that the three-time Ballon d’Or diverted his earnings from image rights and sponsorship into offshore company Multisports & Image Management Ltd., based in Ireland. This move, if true, was undertaken in order to avoid paying more in taxes due to Ireland’s lowest corporation tax in Europe.
It’s stated that the Portuguese ace could owe the Spanish government somewhere near 43.5 percent in taxes from image rights and sponsorships. However, the Treasury has taken up the case, meaning fines – not jail time – will likely be his punishment.
Jose Mourinho was also implicated in a separate yet similar case. Both the Portuguese tactician and the Real Madrid superstar have one thing in common: having Jorge Mendes as agent.
As a result the company owned by the Super Agent, Gestifute, have released a statement. They wrote:
Of course, the company denied any wrongdoing. Furthermore, they threatened to take legal action against those who continue to spread these allegations.
