A Facebook post via his official account totally backfired, as his followers called for more humility during this sad time.

The biggest news in football on Tuesday is that of the Chapecoense tragedy in which a plane carrying players of the Brazilian club crashed, with only three surviving. The club were headed to Colombia to play the first-leg of the Copa Sudamericana final, but lost several players only five days after their joyful progression.

It didn’t take too long for tributes and support to pour in, as fans gathered in front of the club’s stadium during this difficult time. The likes of Mesut Ozil, Sergio Ramos, and Wayne Rooney led the tributes, with Neymar standing by his home country in the wake of this tragedy.

Aguero: "Shocked and saddened by the tragedy of Chapecoense. My condolences and support to the club, families, and friends"

Ramos: "Our thoughts with the Chapecoense, all those affected by the tragedy and their families. There are no words. Much strength"

Many clubs showed solidarity for Chapecoense also, one of them being Real Madrid, as they held a minute silence in respect of the 76 victims prior to a training session. Present was superstar player Cristiano Ronaldo, but the Portuguese icon soon received backlash on Facebook.

Why? A picture was posted on his official Facebook account of himself happy and smiling with his team-mates during the training session, leaving many upset with the three-time Ballon d’Or winner. They felt the post was disgraceful and insensitive in a time when several fellow footballers lost their lives.

A man named Jorge Lux wrote (translation via CRonaldoDaily.com): “I think the moment is very bad to publish such a joke, especially when you’re the best in the world! Think about it.” Another wrote: “Man, where is the solidarity for Chapecoense??? Be more humble, Ronaldo.”

“Cristiano Ronaldo is really showing a lot of ignorance, right now. Not a moment to have such a post… #ForcaChape.”

Some of Cristiano’s followers felt he should have followed Bale’s lead and sent out his condolences. However, it should be noted that Brazilian defender Marcelo, also in the picture, hadn’t tweeted his grief over the tragedy.

No mention of the tragedy from Marcelo

Was Cristiano’s post inappropriate? Although he has no direct relation with Chapecoense, the timing of the post was awful. However, one should not be quick to jump the gun, as the post could have easily come from a PR manager running the player’s social media accounts.
