A historical clash awaits

Montreal Impact

The hosts, who secured their spot at this juncture by beating the Red Bulls 3-1 on aggregate, will be especially worried about the fitness of star man Didier Drogba. The veteran striker has had some injury problems as of late and has been out for nearly a month, so it remains to be seen whether he will be fit in time to feature. However, Montreal Impact fans can count on Ignacio Piatti, who will be expected to provide some of the guile needed to overcome a Toronto side who have frustrated them in recent times. In fact, out of their past five meetings, Montreal have only won once.

Toronto FC

Montreal Impact may have the legendary striker Didier Drogba in their ranks, but visiting opponents Toronto FC are no slouches, either. The Reds punched their ticket to the Eastern Conference final by thrashing NYC FC 7-0 on aggregate. And last season's MVP Sebastian Giovinco has continued in the same form that saw him break league records during his debut in MLS. Meanwhile, the Reds also have American duo Michael Bradley and Jozy Altidore. Both were in the USMNT squad when the Stars and Stripes were humiliated 4-0 by Costa Rica and will be keen on putting that well behind them with a good performance in this match.

Match stats

  • Seattle Sounders have a record of W14 D2 L5 in their past 21 meetings with Colorado Rapids
  • However, Colorado have won their past three meetings, whilst shutting out the Sounders in two of those
  • Colorado Rapids have conceded no more than one goal in their past five matches
  • Seattle have won their past five home playoff games...
  • ...whilst Colorado have lost each of their past five road playoff matches

Can the Sounders break down a tough Colorado defense?

Seattle Sounders

When it was announced that Clint Dempsey would have to miss the season due to a heart ailment, there was certainly some major concern among Sounders supporters. However, the team managed to do pretty well without him in the squad thanks to the impressive performances of players like Nicolas Lodeiro. They presently find themselves just two games away from featuring in the MLS Cup final against either Montreal Impact or Toronto FC. Jordan Morris is another key player who is in serious doubt due to a hamstring problem.

Colorado Rapids

The visitors will be missing quite a few players, but one name will really stand out: Tim Howard. Unfortunately, the veteran shot-stopper suffered an injury during the USMNT's tie against Mexico and is now out for the rest of the season. Howard's presence, of course, was one of the biggest reasons the team had the strongest defense in the Western Conference (with 32 goals conceded) and the pressure will be on Zac MacMath to help them put themselves in a good position heading into the second leg of this series.
