Who will strike first blood in the first Derby della Madonnina of the season?

Milan

After a difficult past few seasons, Milan finally appear to be getting back on track. Vincenzo Montella, who is the sixth coach for the Rossoneri since January 2014, took over this past summer and his tactical approach seems to be working well for the team. They've lost just one out of their past nine Serie A games, whilst winning seven of those and presently find themselves in an impressive third spot in the standings. Given that they have missed out on European football for the past three seasons, Diavolo supporters were not expecting much better this time around.

But with wins against teams like Juventus and showing good fortitude to rebound after a surprise 3-0 loss to Genoa, there is a general feeling of careful optimism among Milan followers around the world. Under Montella's tenure, the team's youngsters, including M'Baye Niang, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Alessio Romagnoli, and Manuel Locatelli have all grown in confidence and continue to play starring roles. In fact, Milan's starting XI, with an average age of just over 25, has consistently been among the youngest in the division so far this season.

Inter

With Frank de Boer's sacking and Stefano Pioli's hiring, the Nerazzurri are now on their third coach. A third manager in just four months certainly is not encouraging for a team who have struggled so far in their domestic and continental campaigns, but the club's owners will be hoping that Pioli, who once managed Lazio, will be able to start to revive their fortunes before the end of the calendar year.

Naturally, a win in tonight's Derby della Madonnina will go a long way in appeasing Inter supporters, who have been quite frustrated with the team's performances all season. Furthermore, the Nerazzurri, who find themselves currently in ninth spot, could possibly even close the gap on a European football spot by coming out on top as things in the middle part of the table are still pretty congested. For Pioli, who was sacked earlier this April after losing 4-1 to Roma, it would also be a chance at redemption in what will be his biggest derby clash to date.

Furthermore, it would also be the perfect launching pad to get back on track and give them some positive momentum ahead of their win-or-go-home Europa League match later this week, but a loss would see them fall into the bottom half of the table.
