So, is Schweinsteiger getting ready to make his debut under Jose Mourinho? Think again
During Wednesday's pre-match press conference, the Portuguese tactician discussed his decision of bringing back the German midfielder to the team's training sessions. Despite what most fans may have thought, Mourinho is by no means thinking about giving the former Bayern Munich player a chance to show his skills.
"We phoned him last Friday so he could join the team last Monday. It was a decision based on fact that we are in a period of the season where it’s really difficult with everybody together. The problem of tactical work that I like to do with 21 players max, to have 23/24 at a time doesn’t happen," Mourinho stated.
The player's commitment to the team was something Mourinho appreciated, even if he wasn't training with the senior squad since his return from the 2016 UEFA Euro.
"Looking at Bastian and the way he was working professionally every day with the fitness coach, we think it’s a professional decision to bring him back to the team," the coach added.
But even if the German midfielder is back with the team, Mourinho can't guarantee he'll enjoy some playing time soon. In fact, Mourinho believes that working out with the senior squad will be good for Schweini in the near future.
"He will be better prepared in case his future decision is to leave the club. In this moment we have no problems in midfield like we do in defence. If we do have problems in midfield, he’s one option for us. It’s a decision that can be positive for the group,"Mourinho concluded.
Manchester United faces Fenerbahce on Thursday in dire need of a win. The Red Devils top group A of the competition, with Feyenoord and their hosts tomorrow hoping to knock hem out of the tournament.
