Former La Albiceleste midfielder Maxi Rodriguez spoke about his compatriot's future, who has been linked to a return to his country in recent years.

Ever since Lionel Messi stated his desire to return to Argentina for one or two seasons prior to his retirement, Newell's Old Boys' fans started dreaming about La Pulga's comeback. Today, one of the team's top players revealed the exact date when the Argentinean superstar would join the red-and-black side.

Midfielder Maxi Rodriguez, who played alongside Messi in the 2006, 2010 & 2014 World Cup editions, hinted that "La Pulga" is set to return to his boyhood after the 2018 World Cup in Russia. Considering that his deal with Barcelona ends prior to the global tournament, Rodriguez's claims are legitimate.

"When we heard about Messi's comments saying that he would like to return to Newell's one day, the club was revolutionised. I think that if it will happen, it will be after the 2018 World Cup in Russia. I do not think it is an option before the World Cup," Rodríguez told TyC Sports.

Messi has been linked with a move away from Los Blaugranas for quite some time, but despite claims about him joining an EPL team, his heart seems to be guiding him home, where he's never enjoyed top-flight football.

While it's only a possibility for the moment, Rodríguez can't wait for fans to enjoy La Pulga's antics on his very own country.

"Hopefully someday we will have the chance to see Messi play for Newell's," the 35-year old concluded.
