Cristiano Ronaldo may be favorite, but don't count La Pulga out of the race just yet.

On Monday, the 30-man shortlist for the upcoming Ballon d’Or prize was revealed, and to no surprise, Lionel Messi was nominated for a potential sixth title. Unfortunately, the Argentine will face stiff competition this time around.

With Cristiano Ronaldo – last season’s Champions League and Euro 2016 winner – and Antoine Griezmann also getting the nod, La Pulga is not everyone’s favorite to lift the prize. In fact, it is his Real Madrid rival who appears to be leading the race.

That is not to say that the 29-year-old lacks a case, because Leo has several things going for his Ballon d’Or bid. He won the league and cup double last season whilst scoring 41 goals in 49 games – an amazing feat given that he had to play alongside the goalscoring machine that is Luis Suarez.

The Blaugrana legend managed 23 assists, and even despite reoccurring injury problems, he has started this season well, scoring 13 goals in nine appearances across La Liga and the Champions League.
