Match facts and other historical stats

  • This will be the first ever meeting between Roma and Austria Wien
  • Austria Wien have won all four of their European road games this season
  • During that run they've scored 10 and conceded four
  • However, the Giallorossi have won their only two matches against Austrian sides (5-1 on aggregate during the 1992/1993 UEFA Cup first round)
  • Die Veilchen also have a bad track record against Italian teams, with just one win in their past 10 games
  • Their solitary win was against Inter back in November 1983 (2-1), and they have yet to win on Italian soil

Can Roma seal a win on a potential historic evening for Francesco Totti?

Roma

Suffice it to say, it has been a pretty good past few weeks for Roma. The Giallorossi come into this game on a three-match winning streak since losing 3-1 to Torino last month. Over the weekend, the hosts earned a well-deserved 3-1 victory over Napoli, which was an impressive feat considering the Partenopei have a very strong record at the Stadio San Paolo. And by crushing Kazakh side Astra 4-0, Roma finally ended a seven-match winless run in European competition that had seen them draw three times and lose four.

This could be a special game for iconic captain Francesco Totti. The Italian star, who has spent his entire career at Roma, could reach a century of appearances in European competition. And despite being 40, the long-serving Giallorossi attacker appeasr to be nowhere near hanging up his boots any time soon.

Austria Wien

Meanwhile, Austria Wien also have four points after winning one and drawing the other of their first two fixtures. They currently sit in fourth spot in the Austrian Bundesliga and are unbeaten in European competition (four wins, one draw) since losing to Slovakian side Trnava at the end of July. However, the team, who are currently led by former Bayern Munich midfielder Thorsten Fink, have failed to get out of their group in their last four European campaigns. Fink himself has faced Roma several times as a player and as a coach. This includes scoring against the Giallorossi during a 3-0 win in the 1996/1997 UEFA Cup and on four occasions whilst as coach of Basel (two wins and two losses).
