Preview

Netherlands

Since securing a third-placed finish at the 2014 World Cup, things have gone horribly awry for the Netherlands. The Oranje shockingly failed to qualify for this summer's Euro tournament, and there are still concerns as to whether Danny Blind's side have what it takes to erase that bad period and make a much-awaited return to the world stage at the 2018 edition.

The hosts, who will be missing captain Wesley Sneijder due to a hamstring problem, are coming into this game off the back of a resounding 4-1 win against minnows Belarus. Surprisingly, although the score-line was a good result, the Netherlands actually were behind for quite some time after their opponents somehow managed to take the lead, but once Sneijder equalized, it was game over for the small Eastern European nation.

With top spot in Group A up for grabs, the hosts will be keen on of course not just picking up all three points, but will also be seeking revenge against France. The last meeting between these two sides at this same venue finished in a five-goal thriller, with Les Bleus edging them out 3-2. In fact, the Oranje have lost their last two meetings with France, being outscored by them by five goals to two, and one will have to go back over eight years to note the last time they defeated their upcoming opponents.

France

France suffered some major heartbreak as they were unfortunately denied a chance to win their third European title this summer. Les Bleus first won it in 1984, then again in 2000, and the hope was that they would be able to continue the cycle by lifting it on home turf. However, Portugal - who were not viewed as favorites prior to the tournament - managed to rebound from a bad start to make it to the finals and deny the home team the coveted trophy.

Didier Deschamps's men have since had to rebound from that disappointment as they turn their attention towards the upcoming World Cup. They were surprisingly held to a dull scoreless stalemate against a Belarus side that parked the bus, but showed their expected superiority to thrash Bulgaria 4-1. Like the Netherlands, they fell behind due to the Eastern European minnows managing to convert their spot-kick, but easily overpowered them to pick up all three points.

In terms of injuries, key defender Barcay Sagna may not be able to feature due to a hamstring problem, but other from that, Deschamps so far has no other concerns to trouble him ahead of Monday's game.
