Estadio Olímpico Atahualpa was the scene of one of the oddest police chases in history, as Ecuador locked horns with Chile in a World Cup qualifier which saw the Copa America champions lose 3-0.
There was police presence, but not to ensure the public safety, rather to confront striker Enner Valencia. The Everton attacker reportedly owes his former wife $17,000 in alimony and was thus wanted for questioning.
The player’s team-mates helped him evade police prior to kick-off, only for him to set up the opening goal. With 10 minutes remaining, the player complained of altitude sickness and was thus golf-carted -- escaped -- off the pitch.
Police waiting on the sidelines were shocked with Valencia, wearing on oxygen map, being carried to exit the stadium and thus pursued the cart on foot.
Law enforcement didn’t catch him, with the English Premier League striker eventually departing from the arena on an ambulance.
De Ripley. Enner Valencia salió en camilla, casi lo arrestan y lo llevaron con prisa a la ambulancia y así salió del estadio. Que cosas. pic.twitter.com/I7VnAWYLC3
