Team news

Cuba

Currently ranked 139th in the world, Cuba made history back in 1938 by becoming the first Caribbean nation to feature at a World Cup. Despite picking up a deserved 2-1 win over Romania after a replay following a three-all draw, they were then humiliated 8-0 by Sweden during the quarter-finals. And since then, they have never made it back into the tournament.

Since then, Los Leones del Caribe won the 2012 Caribbean Cup and also made it to the quarter-finals of the 2003, 2013, and 2015 Gold Cups. As noted before, their only win against the USMNT was nearly 60 years ago, when they overpowered them 5-2, and they truly will be fighting against history if they want to get something out of this fixture. Since picking up a 1-1 stalemate in 1949 during a 1950 World Cup qualifying match, they have since lost their past nine meetings.

USMNT

With the exception of the 1947 and 1949 ties, the Stars and Stripes have been in cruise control for this fixture. The visitors have out-scored their opponents by a whopping 31 to five margin, and will be coming into this game off the back of two straight victories in World Cup qualifying ties last month. Over that time-frame, Jurgen Klinsmann's men fired in ten goals and conceded none against Trinidad & Tobago and St. Vincent & the Grenadines.

And now, they will take on yet another small island nation. Although Klinsmann has opted to leave out veteran shot-stopper Tim Howard as well as deputy Brad Guzan, the German tactician is largely using an experienced squad for this game. Clint Dempsey is out for the unforseeable future due to being diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat, and midfielder Alejandro Bedoya will reportedly also miss out after withdrawing as a result of an injury. However, faces like Michael Bradley, Jozy Altidore, Geoff Cameron, Bobby Wood, and John Brooks are all within the traveling squad, as are promising youngsters like Christian Pulisic and Julian Green.
