South Africa and the USA will clash in a friendly on Wednesday and this match will particularly be special for striker Davide Somma. How will the USA deal with the American reject’s desire for revenge?
He is probably unknown by the largest part of football’s public, but Davide Somma is South Africa’s new capture. The 25-year-old of Italian origins, who plays for Leeds United, has been called up by Coach Mosimane who may eventually benefit a lot from the player’s burning dream of “teaching the USA a good lesson”.

Johannesburg-born Davide Somma, whose parents moved to America as he was 12, was originally keen to represent the United States at the national level. However, he never managed to achieve this dream and following his call-up for the South African national team, he has one thing in mind: to punish the USA.

“The United States didn’t show much interest in me, so I’d love to get on the field and destroy them,” Somma boldly stated in his first interview with South Africa’s media.

“I’d like to impress all South Africans with a decent performance and get one over the US for the way they messed me around and didn’t show much interest in me.”

Considering his record of 7 goals in 14 matches for Leeds United, Davide Somma appears as the perfect player to replace the injured Katlego Mphela. The new Bafana Bafana face seems to have a lot of confidence ahead of Wednesday’s friendly match. The South Africa vs USA encounter will offer Davide Somma a unique opportunity for exposure and he is keen to make the most of it – something which could haunt the visitors.

“I was thrilled when South Africa showed more interest [than the USA]. I had no hesitation in telling the coach that I was available. I look forward to this match,” Somma declared.

“The coach told me to play my normal game. But, like all strikers, I’m desperate to score. No matter which team I play for, I want to score.

“After all, that’s my job and what I do best. I can get behind defenders, run at them, as I have pace, and score goals. But, as for expectation, I obviously want to impress.

“But the coach has said I must not do too much. I’m looking forward to this game, and I hope to shine.”

Coach Bob Bradley may prepare a special plan for Davide Somma who sounds dangerous. Football followers are well aware that anything can happen and that any player can make his mark on any given day. That’s exactly the sort of thing that Somma would like to do for South Africa on Wednesday, and the USA might have to watch out for a tough battle on the pitch. But history could wipe away the Americans’ fear.

They won both of their last two meetings against South Africa and they could well maintain their record come Wednesday. Yes, there’s an end to any beginning but history isn’t always – if not never – easy to defeat. So who will get the better of the other this time round? Is Davide Somma’s burning desire for revenge strong enough to help South Africa destroy USA in Wednesday’s friendly match?
