In what may be one of the strangest stories in modern football, coach Diego Simeone agreed to cut short his contract with Atlético Madrid. The Argentinean manager had signed with Los Colchoneros until the end of the 2019-2020 season, but the coach and the club decided to keep it simple and see El Cholo's commitment running until the end of the 2017-2018 season.
Simeone is arguably one of the most talented managers in the game, with a number of offers flying in to try and lure him away from the Spanish capital giants.
Just eight days ago, Spanish newspaper El Confidencial revealed that Simeone considered leaving the club this summer, after having a falling out with some of the team's execs. Today, both parties announced that their deal would be cut short "for the club's own good".
Simeone's desire to coach La Albiceleste may have been one of the turning points in this decision, considering that El Cholo was one of the top candidates to take the job after Gerardo Martino resigned this summer.
Despite this decision, Spanish newspaper Marca revealed that a clause in Simeone's contract would allow the Argentine to extend his contract with the team, although that notion seems highly unlikely after today's developments and the coach's wishes to work elsewhere.
