Match facts and other historical stats - Belarus vs. France

  • France have won two, drawn one, and lost one of their past four meetings with Belarus
  • However, despite scoring eight in that period, Les Bleus have also conceded five goals

Team News

Belarus

Since becoming independent from the Soviet Union, Belarus have repeatedly tried - and failed - to qualify for two of the world's biggest tournaments: the World Cup and the European Championship. However, they have yet to secure a spot at either. During Euro 2016 qualifying, they finished fourth in a group containing Spain and Slovakia, and for this upcoming World Cup, their task will not be any easier.

Alyaksandr Khatskevich's side will have to take on heavyweights France, as well as the Netherlands and Sweden. Although the Oranje have not been at their best as of late, and the Swedes are now without Zlatan Ibrahimovic, both these teams still have far stronger sides than the small Eastern European nation. Unfortunately, the team, nicknamed the "White Wings" as of this past August, will have to make do without key player Aliaksandr Hleb, with the highly experienced 35-year-old out due to injury.

France

Didier Deschamps's side were certainly bitterly disappointed to lose this summer's Euro final - especially considering that it was on home soil. Furthermore, they put in excellent showings against the likes of Germany and were pretty much in good form, until stumbling against Portugal by conceding an extra-time goal that turned out to be the game winner. However, one must move on, and Les Bleus gained some of their confidence back by overpowering familiar foes Italy 3-1 in a friendly tie prior to this game.

Anthony Martial, Olivier Giroud, and Layvin Kurzawa were all on target for France against the Azzurri, with Martial and Kurzawa netting their debut goals for the senior side. Although their opponents will be feeling good after managing to edge out Norway in their last fixture, Deschamps's men more than have enough star quality to get the job done and pick up their first three points of this campaign.

Broadcast info - Cyprus vs. Belgium

Who's playing: New Belgian national team coach Roberto Martinez will be hoping to pick up a win in his first ever competitive game in charge. The Red Devils will first take on Cyprus, a side that have never qualified for a Euro competition or a World Cup.

Match facts and other historical stats - Cyprus vs. Belgium

  • Cyprus have never beaten Belgium in nine prior attempts
  • Belgium have won eight out of their nine past meetings with Cyprus
  • The Red Devils have also kept clean sheets in all but two of those last nine matches
  • This will be the second meeting in nearly exactly a year between Cyprus and Belgium

Team News

Cyprus

Coincidentally, Cyprus will be facing Belgium for the second time in nearly exactly a year. In fact, the last time the two sides squared off was on September 5, 2015 during a Euro 2016 qualifier, with Eden Hazard's goal deciding that match. Since then, Christakis Christoforou's side have struggled to find their footing, with just one win in their past couple of games, and barring a surprising miracle, will find it highly difficult to get anything out of their qualifying opener against the Red Devils.

Belgium

Since failing to make the grade at this summer's Euro tournament, Belgium have undergone a lot of changes. The biggest one, of course, is who's on the tactician's bench. Marc Wilmots was replaced by former Everton boss Roberto Martinez in a move that surprised many, but if that was surprising, even more so was the appointment of retired French star Thierry Henry to his coaching staff.

So far, it hasn't started off well for Martinez, who saw his team fall to a 2-0 defeat to Spain in his first ever game in charge. Fortunately, Cyprus are not only a side in flummox, but also have yet to beat Belgium in nine prior attempts. This should represent a golden opportunity for Martinez to get his new team up and running as they look to make amends after a very disappointing Euro showing in France.
