Team news

Norway

Suffice it to say, things have been quite difficult for the hosts over the past year. All appeared to be well following a hard-fought victory against Croatia back in October 2015, but Norway would go on to lose three consecutive matches which scuppered their chances at featuring at Euro 2016.

The start of 2016 hasn't brought them better fortunes, either. Out of their six friendlies, Per-Mathias Høgmo's men have won just two: a 2-0 result against Finland in March followed by a narrow 3-2 victory over Iceland in June. They will now be hosting the reigning World Cup champions having lost back-to-back ties, including a disappointing 1-0 defeat to Belarus. That game will be even more frustrating for Norwegian fans as several players will not be able to feature due to injuries.

Defenders Vegard Forren and Jørgen Skjelvik as well as forwards Alexander Søderlund and Pål André Helland were either injured prior to or during that game. In addition, midfielder Valon Berisha has decided to take advantage of Kosovo being admitted to FIFA and UEFA and has switched his nationality.

Germany

Germany will be coming into this match following a solid 2-0 win over Finland in a friendly match. An own goal resulting from a Mesut Ozil cross and a debut effort from Max Meyer were enough to give die Mannschaft the result they needed following a disappointing loss to France at this summer's Euro tournament. The game was notable also due to three significant changes: the retirement of Bastian Schweinsteiger after a career spanning 12 years as well as Ozil switching from the no. 8 to the no. 10 shirt.

The third big modification is who's been installed as the new captain. With Schweinsteiger announcing his departure, he has now been replaced by Bayern Munich's star shot-stopper Manuel Neuer:

Germany's route to Russia appears to be pretty straightforward, as die Mannschaft received a favorable group. In addition to Norway, they will take on minnows San Marino (which guarantee a definite six points) and Azerbaijan, as well as Euro 2016 debutants Northern Ireland and the Czech Republic.
