Broadcast info

Who's playing? Belgium will begin Roberto Martinez's era in front of a home crowd against Spain. Following their quarter-final exit from the tournament, the Belgian Football Association decided to part ways with former coach Marc Wilmots, giving Roberto Martinez the chance to work with the Red Devils. Martinez added Thierry Henry to his coaching staff, which should be useful for all of the team's strikers.

On the other side of the pitch, the Spanish National Team saw their reign as European champions come to a close when Italy defeated them in the UEFA Euro's Round of 16. Coach Vicente del Bosque stepped down, bringing in Julen Lopetegui as his replacement. Lopetegui is the first coach in Spain's history to manage all of the team's categories (U-17, U-19 & U-21). Will he be able to repeat his success with the senior squad?

Match facts

  • This will be the 12th match between these National Teams. Spain has won 6 of those games, with three wins for Belgium and two draws so far. Nevertheless, one of those draws ended with a penalty shootout won by Belgium in the 1986 World Cup.

  • Spain has an ongoing streak of four wins against Belgium.

  • Belgium hasn't been able to defeat Spain since a UEFA Euro Qualifier match held in June, 1980.

  • This game was scheduled to be played back in November 2015, but it was cancelled for security reasons.

Team news

Belgium could have two pairs of brothers playing for the National team for the first time: the Lukaku brothers (Jordan and Romelu) and the Hazard siblings (Eden and Thorgan). This game will be useful for Martinez in order to prepare the team's debut in the World Cup Qualifiers against Cyprus.

The Spanish team will also use this game to adjust to their new coach's style. After more than eight years with Del Bosque at the helm, the team needed a fresh start, which could be provided by Lopetegui. Saul Ñíguez and goalkeeper Adrían could be handed their first game with La Roja, who won't have Iker Casillas around for the first time in years. This is Lopetegui's first call up as Spain's new coach.
