A storm is slowly building over Old Trafford, according to the latest reports from Manchester.

Manchester United’s board and Jose Mourinho are in a disagreement over the ongoing transfer activity at the club. The Red Devils have spent close to £150m this summer to bring in four new players namely Henrikh Mkhitaryan, Zlatan Ibrahimovic, Eric Bailly and Paul Pogba.

But according to Manchester Evening News, the club’s board is growing increasingly frustrated by Mourinho’s transfer plans. The report claims that the Portuguese tactician now wants to sign Southampton defender Jose Fonte for £25m, despite being 32 years old.

The Red Devils are currently suffering from a high wage bill as three of the Premier League’s highest paid footballers play the for Manchester-based club. Another factor that seems to irk the club’s board is the fact that there are a number of players who rarely feature for the first team, but earn huge salaries at the club. For instance, midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger, who has not featured for any match under Mourinho, takes home £200,000 a week.

The board suggests that such players should be released before bringing in new reinforcements, something that Mourinho does not seem to be willing to do. The central midfield, in particular, has at least five players who can play in that position – Marcus Rojo, Phil Jones, Daley Blind, Chris Smalling and the impressive new signing Eric Bailly. It will be interesting to see how Mourinho will handle the situation but with less than nine days to the end of the transfer season, Man United fans could witness the departure of key players and the arrival of new faces.
