Match facts and other historical stats - Porto vs. Roma

  • Not only have Porto lost their last four European matches, but they have also failed to score
  • Roma have been unable to find the back of the net in their last three European ties
  • Porto have a poor record against Italian sides, with 11 losses, eight draws, and seven wins
  • The Giallorossi have played Portuguese outfits on 12 prior occasions and have fared solidly: five wins, four draws, and three losses

Team news

Porto

Porto are presently led by Nuno Espírito Santo, who joined the club this past June. The ex-goalkeeper, who spent two spells at his current side, will be relying on the veteran expertise of Iker Casillas, who not only has won this competition three times previously, but also is no stranger to facing Roma. Whilst at Real Madrid, the Spanish star squared off against the Lupi seven times, which resulted in four wins and three draws. Casillas himself will be eager to start things off right after making some embarrassing mistakes during his debut term with the Dragons last season.

Roma

As coach of Russian powerhouse Zenit, Luciano Spalletti faced Porto a total of four times. Encouragingly for Giallorossi fans, he never lost. Indeed, Spalletti, who arrived in the middle of last season for a second spell following Rudi Garcia's sacking, helped to turn things around at the capital club as they went from floundering to secure third spot. With the Serie A season set to commence this weekend, Roma will certainly want to head into their tie with Udinese having sealed a road win in this game, especially since the second leg is just a week away.

However, Roma will have to overcome a bad record away from home. Whilst their opponents have just lost once in their past ten games at their stadium, the Lupi have failed to win any of their nine road fixtures. Still, with the options at their disposal - namely the attacking trio of Mohamed Salah, Stephan El Shaarawy, and Diego Perotti - plus the evergreen Francesco Totti, the visitors may have what it takes to slay the Dragons on their own home turf.

Broadcast info - Villarreal vs. Monaco

Who's playing: Villarreal will be hoping to make a return to Europe's premier club competition after a five year hiatus. However, the Yellow Submarine will be facing a very tricky Monaco side who will be trying to figure out how to re-group after losing one of their key players.

What time: Wednesday, August 17th at 11:45 PST/14:45 EST/20:45 CET

What stadium: The Estadio El Madrigal, which, of course, is Villarreal's home ground, will be hosting this fixture. It has a maximum capacity of just under 25,000 (24,890) which is also about half the entire population of Vila-real.

Match facts and other historical stats - Villarreal vs. Monaco

  • Villarreal are seeking their first Champions League group stage participation since the 2011/2012 season
  • This will be the first ever meeting between the Yellow Submarine and Monaco
  • So far, Villarreal have squared off against French sides on four occasions, with two wins and two draws
  • Monaco, by contrast, have played Spanish opposition 18 times before this match, and their record is so-so: six wins, four draws, and eight losses

Team news

Villarreal

The Yellow Submarine have seen some managerial changes this summer, with Marcelino departing to be replaced by former youth-team product Fran Escribá. Escribá, who previously coached Elche and Getafe, will be looking to guide Villarreal into the group stages of the Champions League, where they will join Barcelona, Atletico Madrid, Real Madrid, and serial Europa League winners Sevilla. However, they will have to manage this without the services of two key players: Roberto Soldado and Cedric Bakambu.

Soldado, unfortunately, is out for the long haul after the Spanish striker suffered a knee injury, with recent reports indicating at least a six month spell on the sidelines. Meanwhile, African attacker Bakambu is also unavailable due to his own injury problems, and will be joined by Jonathan Dos Santos and the Russian winger Dennis Cheryshev. The summer transfer market has also taken its toll on Villarreal, with key members like Eric Bailly and Denis Suarez moving on to Manchester United and Barcelona respectively.

Monaco

Unlike Villarreal, Monaco have already featured in European competition this season. Les Rouges et Blancs arrive in Spain having edged out Turkey's Fenerbahçe 4-3 on aggregate, but the win came at a price. Unfortunately for Leonardo Jardim's side, they will not be able to rely on Radamel Falcao for this fixture, as the Colombian star suffered a hamstring injury and now is set to miss at least the next few weeks.

It certainly is a bitter blow, not just for the team, but especially for the player himself. Since being struck by injury shortly before the 2014 World Cup, the striker, once known as "King of the Europa League" due to his exploits in the continent's second-tier competition, has struggled horribly for form and fitness. Two spells at Manchester United and Chelsea ended in disappointment, and Monaco fans surely would have wanted to see what he could do against Villarreal. In fact, the last time Falcao faced them, he was featuring for Porto, and scored a whopping five goals (including a poker in the first leg) to help them to a 7-4 aggregate win during the 2010/2011 Europa League semi-finals.
