Manchester United fans hoping to see Paul Pogba play his first English Premier League since leaving Old Trafford back in 2012 will be left disappointed, as the Frenchman is suspended for Matchday 1.
The former Juventus ace finally made his return to the Red Devils after months of speculation, signing for Jose Mourinho’s side for a world-record transfer fee of £89.3m, surpassing Gareth Bale as the most expensive player in history.
However, the 23-year-old won’t be available to take part in the 20-time Premier League champions’ 2016/17 opening clash with Bournemouth.
His suspension was confirmed by the FA on Friday. The reason: Pogba picked up two yellow cards in last season’s Coppa Italia tournament – the latter coming in the final win over AC Milan.
With the suspension carrying over, the midfield superstar will not feature in Sunday’s game. However, he will be eligible to play in Man United’s first home clash of 2016/17, against Southampton on August 19.
Star defender Chris Smalling is another player suspended for the trip to Dean Court. In the English center-back's absence, summer signing Eric Bailly could make his debut
