  • To date, however, they have yet to win a gold medal, with three silvers (the most recent in 2012) and two bronzes

  • Hosts haven't had it easy: since Belgium's triumph in Antwerp in 1920, only one host has won in the past 20 competitions - Spain at Barcelona back in 1992

Team news

Brazil

The Seleção come into this tournament with the weight of a nation's hopes on their shoulders. Surprisingly, for a team that has won the most World Cups out of any side on this planet, Brazil have yet to translate this success when it comes to the Olympics. They were painfully close to ending their decades long wait for Olympic gold, but unfortunately lost 2-1 to Mexico in the finals contested in London.

Currently under the guidance of Rogerio Micale, Brazil boast several players who are already well known due to plying their trades with some of Europe's biggest clubs. In addition to captain and Barcelona ace Neymar, there is PSG's Marquinhos, Lazio's Felipe Anderson, and Neymar's Blaugrana colleague, Rafinha (who is the younger brother of Bayern Munich's Thiago).

For all intents and purposes, this looks set to be a one-sided clash, especially since Brazil easily cruised to a 3-1 win over South Africa in their last meeting. However, the hosts will not be taking their opponents lightly as they want to ensure they have all three points in the bag ahead of their next two games against Iraq and Denmark.

South Africa

The Amaglug-glug, meanwhile, are making their first Olympic appearance since 2000. Owen Da Gama's lads are by far the underdogs in this game, but if Leicester City are any indication, anything is truly possible in football. Since 2015, South Africa have taken part in ten matches, including the U-23 AFCON tournament in which they finished in third spot.

Out of those ten games, they have won four, lost four, and drawn two, including a recent 3-1 defeat to Brazil less than five months ago in a friendly.

Broadcast info - Mexico vs. Germany

Who's playing: Mexico surprised the football world by winning gold four years ago in London, and they will be hoping to successfully defend their title. However, Germany will be no pushover, and die Mannschaft are gunning to make an impact in their first Olympics appearance since 1988.

What time: Thursday, August 4th at 13.00 PST/16.00 EST/20.00 UTC/21.00 BST/22.00 CET

What stadium: This game will be played at the Itaipava Arena Fonte Nova. Located in Salvador, it has a maximum capacity of 51,708.

Match facts and other historical stats - Mexico vs. Germany

  • Germany are making their first Olympics appearance since winning bronze in Seoul in 1988
  • Mexico have a bad record against Germany, with just one win out of their past ten games
  • Germany, by contrast, have enjoyed positive results versus Mexico - four draws, five wins, and just one loss (last ten matches)
  • Mexico's worst Olympic result - a 7-0 drubbing - came at the hands of East Germany on September 5, 1972

Team news

Mexico

Raul Gutierrez's side secured their spot in Brazil by winning the 2015 CONCACAF Olympic Championship thanks to a 2-0 win over Honduras. Having won gold at the 2012 edition, Mexico will naturally be seeking to repeat this in Brazil, but they will face a stern test in their Olympic opener against Germany. Key players for them include Oribe Peralta, who was an integral part in their winning side four years ago, as well as experienced shot-stopper Alfredo Talavera - who is making his Olympic debut at the age of 33.

Hirving Lozano, who plies his trade with local side Pachua and was reportedly being tracked by Manchester United is another player that Mexico will be counting on. The 21-year-old has netted 27 goals in 114 appearances for his club side and was rated by Don Balon as one of the best players in the world in 2015.

Germany

Horst Hrubesch will have a pretty strong squad at his disposal, with twins Lars and Sven Bender representing two of the over-aged players for Germany this summer. With the exception of Serge Gnabry, who plays his club football for Arsenal, everyone else features for teams within the Bundesliga. Players like Schalke's Leon Goretzka and Leverkusen's Julian Brandt are certainly familiar names to fans who tune in to catch German football on a weekly basis, and they are among those who will be expected to make an impact for Germany as they try to navigate their way through this tournament.

To date, Germany have never won a gold medal, let alone a silver one, either. Curiously, like Brazil, they have in fact not fared as well in Olympic competitions, and so far, their best result has been two bronze medals in 1964 and 1988.
