  • Die Roten have won four times, whilst the Sky Blues have won three
  • Their last competitive meeting was in November 2014, when City beat Bayern 3-2 during the Champions League group stages. Sergio Aguero scored a brilliant hat-trick to cancel out goals from Xabi Alonso and Robert Lewandowski
  • This will be the second friendly clash between the two sides. The first was in August 2013 during the Audi Cup, and Bayern defeated City 2-1 (with goals from Alvaro Negredo, Thomas Muller, and Mario Mandzukic)

  • In addition, veteran defender Martin Demichelis, who was released this past June, had spent nearly eight seasons with Bayern before arriving at City in 2013

Team news

Bayern Munich

Although international stars like Philipp Lahm, Xabi Alonso, Frank Ribery, and Javi Martinez will likely be in the starting XI for this exhibition match, Bayern are still without a whole crop of players, including Manuel Neuer, Jerome Boateng, Thomas Muller, Arturo Vidal, David Alaba, and Robert Lewandowski. Unfortunately, die Roten will be missing two additional key members, with Arjen Robben suffering yet another injury set-back during the team's 4-3 friendly win over Lippstadt.

The Dutch international's struggles with fitness have been long documented, and fans and his manager will hope that the versatile attacker will be able to recover in time for the upcoming term. An additional absentee will be Brazilian star Douglas Costa, and his club recently provided an update on his estimated recovery time:

Bayern, like many of Europe's big clubs, have also been active in the transfer market. Former Dortmund captain Mats Hummels also opted to say Auf Wiedersehen to die Schwarzgelben and make a return to Bayern, where he began his footballing career, in a deal worth about €38 million. Another big signing for die Roten is promising youngster Renato Sanches for about €35 million; however, neither the 18-year-old nor Hummels will feature after taking part in the Euro tournament.

Manchester City

As noted before, this will be the first summer pre-season match for Manchester City. Following this match, Pep Guardiola's side will take on cross-town rivals Manchester United and then Borussia Dortmund in the ICC over in China. The Sky Blues' pre-season campaign will conclude with a clash against fellow Premier League giants Arsenal in Sweden in August.

For this match, City will be without the services of Sergio Aguero, Joe Hart, Eliaquim Mangala, Kevin De Bruyne, David Silva and Bacary Sagna due to their international commitments. However, there will be still quite a few first-team players available, including Brazilian duo Fernando and Fernandinho, Jesus Navas, Gael Glichy, Fabian Delph, Wilfried Bony, and Nigerian starlet Kelechi Iheanacho.

In terms of transfers, Manchester City so far have brought in four players (not including promotions from the youth squad). The most notable of these is Celta de Vigo's Nolito and Borussia Dortmund's Ilkay Gundogan, who cost an estimated £13.8 million and £20 million respectively. And they are apparently not done spending, with reports claiming they are prepared to splash a whopping £50 million (about €60 million) to bring in Leonardo Bonucci from Juventus - which would equal the world-transfer fee set by PSG's purchase of David Luiz back in 2014.
