New Chelsea boss Antonio Conte has announced John Terry will remain captain of the English side.

Terry seemed to be on his way out of Stamford Bridge this summer, but the 35-year-old agreed to a one-year deal with the club.

Speaking at a general press conference, the Italian boss believes the defender is still the right man for the job.

"John Terry signed a new deal as a player…. Not in any other role.

“John Terry is the captain of this team, a great player with great charisma.

“I want to speak with him because he knows the club, the spirit and for me he is an important player.

“All the players know that when a player deserves to play, with me he will play.

“When he plays or doesn’t play you are always the captain. John Terry is always the captain.”

The long-serving Blues has been at Chelsea for 18 seasons and has proved to be a key player on the pitch. He has made a whopping 483 appearances for the London-based club, netting 40 goals in the process.

During his time at Stamford Bridge, Terry has lifted four Premier League titles, five FA Cups, three League Cups and three Community Shield trophies. He also clinched one UEFA Champions League and one UEFA Europa League title. In addition to his long list of silverware, the full-back has also received many individual awards. Terry was named Chelsea's Player of the Year in both 2001 and 2006. He was also named UEFA Club Defender of the Year in 2005, 2008 and 2009.  Furthermore, the ex-Nottingham Forest footballer was included in the FIFA FIFPro World XI for five consecutive years, from 2005 until 2009.
