Brazil's chances of winning the Olympic Gold Medal in football have been handed a serious blow, as one of their top performers will watch the competition on TV.
Douglas Costa, who was elected by Rogerio Micale as one of the team's reinforcements, couldn't recover in time from a muscular injury, which also prevented him from playing the 2016 Copa América Centenario.
The player wasn't cleared to play after having a medical with his club, Bayern Munich. Earlier today, Bayern's exec Karl-Heinz Rummenigge revealed the news in a short press release.
"We're truly sorry, but Douglas won't be able to play in the Olympics. All of us wanted him to play for his country, but his health has to be the top priority," the former footballer stated.
Costa had an impressive maiden season with Bayern Munich, scoring seven goals in all competitions for the Bavarians. His dribbling skills earned him praise in the German top flight, helping Die Roten win their fourth straight Bundesliga and the DFB Pokal.
Bayern's medical staff has informed that the player will start his recovery process in the following weeks.
