Fernando Torres will stay with Atletico Madrid for one more season.

Atletico Madrid star forward Fernando Torres has penned a new one-year deal with the Spanish giants ahead of the new La Liga season. The Spaniard had been linked with a move out of the club following his impressive 2015/16 season for Diego Simeone’s men when he scored 12 goals in 44 appearances. He also steered his side to the Champions League finals against city rivals Real Madrid in Milan on May 8, but lost on post-match penalties.

He now joins fellow striker Antoine Griezmann who agreed a new deal with the club last week. Torres will stay with Los Rojiblancos for one more season before negotiating a new deal or seeking a transfer out of the Spanish club.

Speaking to the club's website after confirming the deal, El Nino said:

"Happy to be here, I've never had doubts about where I wanted to be during all this process in which we didn't know what was going to happen and, in the end, what matters is that I have achieved what I was waiting for."

The Champions League winner with Chelsea has a wide range of experience at the club level, having played for Liverpool, Chelsea and Italian giants AC Milan. Before joining Liverpool, he started his footballing career at Atletico in 2001 and spent six seasons with the club.

But the 32-year-old conspicuously missed the Euro 2016 after failing to make the cut in Vincente del Bosque’s squad. He made his debut for his country in 2003 and has since scored 38 goals in 110 appearances for La Furia Roja.
