Make sure to watch Hungary vs Portugal and Iceland vs Austria live on Wednesday, June 22nd. Group F’s UEFA Euro fixtures on Matchday 3 carry so much thrill. We analyze the possible scenarios.

Hungary’s luxury – to qualify as Group F winners or not?

Hungary have qualified! Is this good news for Cristiano Ronaldo and his team mates? Perhaps. Now that they are guaranteed of a place in the Last 16, the Hungarians may not display as much hunger as the Portuguese squad on Wednesday. They may however want to protect their position as Group F leaders.

This is tricky, though, because the reward for winning Group F is a clash against Group E’s runners-up – possibly Belgium! Looking at how Eden Hazard and Lukaku unleashed their fury against the Republic of Ireland on Matchday 2, one may prefer to face Group B runners-up England by qualifying as runners-up of Group F.

Hungary will qualify as runners-up of their section if:

• They lose to Portugal and Iceland lose or draw against Austria

• They draw against Portugal and Iceland defeat Austria

Portugal’s do-or-die mission – how Cristiano Ronaldo & co. could qualify

Meanwhile, for Cristiano Ronaldo and company, there is no luxury of choosing to qualify as first or second of their group based on Last 16 match-ups. At this point in the tournament, the three-time Ballon d’Or winner is facing a very difficult test – that of showcasing what he is a made of and finally kick-starting his team’s campaign. The first two games for the Portuguese captain were nightmares he will want to forget. Both his fervent supporters and anti-fans will be following Wednesday’s game against Hungary with their eyes wide open. Will CR7 be forced to pack his bags early and become a laughing stock or will he silence critics and carry his nation further into the tournament?

As of now, Portugal are only fifth among the six third-ranked teams. To grab automatic Last 16 tickets, they have only one option: to beat Hungary.

Ranking of third placed teams at the UEFA Euro 2016

Victory would offer them the top spot in Group F provided Iceland fail to defeat Austria or don’t outscore Portugal in terms of goals difference or goals for.

Interestingly, a draw could very well be enough for Portugal to advance to the next stage. Clinching a point against Hungary would see them finish with 3 points and a (+0) goal difference. Based on such a scenario, regardless of what happens in Group E with Italy vs Ireland and Sweden vs Belgium, Portugal would then leapfrog both Group D’s Turkey (3 points; -2) and Group A’s Albania (3 points; -2) who are currently third and fourth on the table of the best third-placed teams.

Iceland on the brink of letting Cristiano Ronaldo eat his words

After failing to beat Iceland on Matchday 1, a frustrated Cristiano Ronaldo declared that "Iceland didn’t try anything" and "parked the bus in the net" before publicly belittling the debutants' achievement by stating:

"I thought they'd won the Euros the way they celebrated at the end, it was unbelievable.

"When they don't try to play and just defend, defend, defend... this in my opinion shows a small mentality and they are not going to do anything in the competition."

As things stand, ironically, "defensive" Iceland have netted more goals than Portugal at UEFA Euro 2016. Although both teams possess 2 points from a possible six, the Icelandic nation seats above the Portuguese thanks to the "Goals For" rule. They have their fate in their hands while Portugal’s is hanging by a thread with much pressure to overcome.

• If Iceland draw and Hungary beat Portugal, the latter will crash out and Iceland will advance as runners-up

• If Iceland beat Austria, they could win Group F depending on the sharing of goals in the group’s other game

• If Iceland draw or win and Portugal do the same, both will qualify for the next stage – making it interesting to see who will go the farthest and “do something in the competition”.
