The Manchester United striker believes England will have a great set of players in the future, regardless of how far Roy Hodgson's side go in UEFA Euro 2016.
In their two appearances, the Three Lions have displayed strong performances, proving to be among the favorites to win the title. They first were held to a 1-1 draw against Russia but later bagged their first victory, beating neighbors Wales 2-1 in a thrilling match.
Rooney has yet to score in this top-flight tournament but has played a major role in the team.
Speaking at the pre-match press conference, the 30-year-old England international envisions a promising side in the years to come.
"We've got a very good, exciting squad and I think time will tell.
"I think we're not going to get judged on what happens in this tournament - I think the players have got a lot of years ahead of them and this tournament will help.
"But we're not here as a group of players for the experience, we're here to try and do well and go far.
"But I certainly think over the next few years this squad can grow into a better team, a more mature team. But at the minute, we're trying to do as well as we can and we feel we've had a good start.
"We hope we can continue that and go into the later stages of the tournament."
Roy Hodgson's men are only one point away from advancing to the knockout stage of this competition. They face Slovakia on Monday at the Geoffroy-Guichard stadium, in hopes to secure a win or draw to keep their hopes alive in France.
