The striker had a golden chance to score the opening goal for Portugal against Austria, but his shot ended hitting the upright.

Not even a penalty kick was able to grant Cristiano Ronaldo the chance to make UEFA Euro history on his record-setting 128th appearance for his country.

The Portuguese international was awarded a penalty kick against Austria inside the last 15 minutes. As expected, he stepped up to try and score it. Nevertheless, the Real Madrid striker failed to put the ball past the keeper. His right-footed shot crashed against the bottom of the left post with the rebound resulting into nothing.

This was the second straight penalty miss by Cristiano Ronaldo with his national team. His most recent miss came back in March, during a friendly match. The match ended goalless, earning Austria their first point. Portugal, meanwhile, are faced with a do-or-die clash on Matchday 3 against group leaders Hungary.
