Cristiano Ronaldo wants to face one of his former teammates in the Euro 2016.

Real Madrid and Portugal star Cristiano Ronaldo relishes a chance to face his former Manchester United teammate Wayne Rooney in the Euro 2016 in France. The ex-Man United player is expected to be fit before the European tournament after taking a break from international friendlies to concentrate on his fitness. The 31-year-old scored Real Madrid’s winning penalty during the Champions League final against Atletico Madrid in Milan.

Both Ronaldo and Rooney are the captains of Portugal and England respectively. The two super stars have faced each other twice at the international level, once at the Euro 2004 and during the 2006 FIFA Would Cup. The Portuguese won both fixtures.

Ronaldo told The Sunday Mirror:

"A match against England would be very emotive for me – because of Wayne Rooney and because of many other things too. Roo [Rooney] is now a leader and that's not a surprise,"

"I was always convinced that he would be a star for England and, inevitably, captain one day. It's a perfect role for him after the era of Beckham and Terry. For me, the character and pride of Rooney is unique – he's still very important for England."

The two players formed a lethal partnership between 2004 and 2009 at Old Trafford, scoring more than 200 league goals between them. Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney at Manchester UnitedHe also backed England to give their best performance in France. He added:

"I've watched some of England's recent matches and they have been good to watch. They could do well this time.’’

"For me, England always have a chance to do well in big tournaments and this time they are arriving in France with some ¬interesting young players who have a big future. The connection in the team and the team spirit looks positive. Both Jamie Vardy and Harry Kane have scored a lot of goals and had success this year too."

Portugal face Iceland in their first match of the Euro 2016 on July 14 at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard in Saint-Etienne.
