With not long remaining until the Copa América Centenario, the USMNT are now starting to ramp up their preparations for the big event.
The final 23-man squad has been announced, whilst head coach Jürgen Klinsmann continues to decide who he will ultimately field as his first choice starting XI through a series of friendlies. Next up on the menu for the Stars and Stripes will be a friendly clash against Ecuador, which will be contested at Frisco's Toyota Stadium this Wednesday evening.
USMNT
After picking up 3-1 win against Puerto Rico last weekend, Klinsmann's men will now face a much tougher opponent - Ecuador. For starters, the visitors are ranked 12th in the world as per FIFA. By contrast, the USA are ranked 29th. Their last meeting, which took place on October 10, 2014 finished as a one-all stalemate and the Stars and Stripes have not beaten Ecuador since March 2007.
Not exactly promising reading for USA fans, especially considering that the head to head record in this series stands as two wins, five draws, and five losses for the hosts. Furthermore, although they did, as expected, beat Puerto Rico, many had expected Klinsmann's side to cruise to a much easier victory - especially given that Puerto Rico are ranked 152nd in the world.
However, with stars like Clint Dempsey and Michael Bradley now available for selection after being absent due to MLS duties, the team's true form will start to really take shape. The USA have only lost one out of their past five fixtures - a shock 2-0 reversal to Guatemala in World Cup qualifiers - and will be keen on testing their mettle against one of the sides they may encounter at this summer's Copa América Centenario tournament.
Ecuador
As for Ecuador, they finished 2015 on an excellent note. Following a 3-2 defeat to Bolivia, they started with a well-deserved 2-1 win over Mexico in their final group stage game at the 2015 Copa América and went on a six match winning streak to close out the year.
However, Los Amarillos have not had a good start to 2016. So far, they have yet to win any of their World Cup qualifying games, with a draw against Paraguay and a heavy 3-1 defeat to Colombia taking place this past March. As such, with this being the first of two warm-up games before they take on Brazil next month, Ecuador will be keen on maintaining their good run of form against the USA to give them some confidence heading into this summer's tournament.
