This season's Ligue 1 title race was one that many French football fans could not have predicted. Although many expected PSG to defend their league title, not many anticipated Les Parisiens blowing away the competition the way that they did.
By the time the dust settled, Laurent Blanc's side had effectively ended any hopes of their competitors catching up by matchday 30. Ultimately, PSG finished the season with a record-setting 96 points. To illustrate how far ahead they were ahead of everyone else, the second placed team, Lyon, finished over 30 points behind, with 65.
Next up for the reigning Ligue 1 champions will be the Coupe de France, in which they will be taking on Marseille on Saturday evening.
Olympique Marseille
Given that Marseille finished in a solid fourth place in the 2014/2015 season, they were expected to at least compete for a European spot this term. However, the turbulence on the tactician's bench certainly did not help their cause. First, Marcelo Bielsa resigned after just one match in charge. Then, Michel was brought in, but was sacked in April, and Franck Passi took over until the end of the season.
Ultimately, Marseille ended up finishing the season in a very disappointing 13th place. The one saving grace for the team has been the Coupe de France, and should they manage to beat reigning title holders PSG, they will be able to book their spot in the Europa League group stages.
However, this is where things get very complicated for Marseille. For starters, they have not beaten PSG since November 27, 2011, when they cruised to a 3-0 win in Ligue 1 action. Since then, they have lost ten out of their last 11 meetings with Les Parisiens, including both Ligue 1 fixtures this season (by a 2-1 scoreline).
PSG
Last season, PSG made history as the first French team to win a domestic treble: Ligue 1, the Coupe de la Ligue, and the Coupe de France. Having already completed two parts of this treble this season, Les Parisiens are 90 minutes away from again making history by making it back-to-back domestic trebles.
Blanc's men will be coming into this game having strolled to a very comfortable 4-0 victory over Nantes. Zlatan Ibrahimovic grabbed a brace in his last league game for the club, and with this being the final overall match for the 34-year-old, he will certainly hope to add more to his tally. In just four seasons, the Swedish superstar has already become PSG's all-time goalscorer, with 154 goals in 179 appearances, and scored a club-record 38 goals in Ligue 1 this season.
PSG did experience yet another season of disappointment in the Champions League as they were edged out 3-2 by Manchester City, but will be seeking to wrap up this campaign by successfully defending their Coupe de France title. Should they - as expected - beat Marseille, Les Parisiens will make it 10 Coupe de France trophies. This will then pull them level with Marseille for the most titles won in this competition.
