Bayer Leverkusen's top scorer this season will try to complete a wonderful year by helping Mexico win the international competition.

Mexican striker Javier "Chicharito" Hernández was born in the city of Guadalajara on June 1, 1988. His first big break in football came when he signed a five-year-deal with Manchester United back in 2010. After a few seasons with the Red Devils and a loan spell with Real Madrid, El Tri's striker signed with Bayer Leverkusen, where he quickly established himself as the club's main goal scoring threat. Hernández has played for Mexico's "A" Team since September 2009.

Chicharito on Social Media

Javier Hernández, who's nickname means "Little Pea", has more than nine million followers on social media. His Twitter account, @CH14, has 6.3 million followers, while his Instagram account, ch14_instagram is followed by 3.1 million users. The player doesn't have an official Facebook page (he even states that in both of his social media accounts). He decided to make that statement since there are a lot of fake accounts under his name.

Chicharito's playing style & impact with Mexico

The Mexican footballer is well-known for being a hard worker on and off the pitch. Hernández's skills have improved with age. He has developed quick feet and a sense of awareness in the box.

Even though he's been labeled as a "super-sub", Chicharito is three goals away from becoming Mexico's all-time top scorer. His only title triump with Mexico happened at the 2011 Gold Cup. Since then, he has contributed to the team's fine performances during the 2010 and 2014 World Cups, scoring three goals for El Tri. In October 2015, Javier Hernández scored for Mexico during the CONCACAF Cup. His opening goal in the 10th minute set up his country's 3-2 win over eternal rivals USA, en route to the 2017 FIFA Confederations Cup.

Chicharito's career highlights

Javier Hernández has played for some of Europe's best teams, already. The Mexican ace won a couple of Premier League titles with Manchester United. Adding to his resume are three Community Shield titles with the Red Devils. During his loan spell with Real Madrid, the player won the 2014 FIFA Club World Cup. Back in December 2015, Hernández won the 2015 CONCACAF Player of the year award.

Chicharito's 2015-2016 highlights

During his maiden season with Bayer Leverkusen, "Chicharito" became the team's top scorer in all competitions. He netted 17 goals in the Bundesliga, five more in the Champions League, and added four strikes in the DFB Pokal. His form was not overlooked by Bundesliga fans, who crowned him as Player of the Month in November, December and January 2016. After the season came to a close, Chicharito was included in the Bundesliga's Team of the Season. He was the most voted player in the lineup.

Facts about Chicharito

  • He is a third-generation footballer in his family, and all of them had the chance to play in a World Cup. His grandfather, Tomás Balcázar, played at the 1954 World Cup, while his father Javier played at the 1986 tournament.

  • He needs just four more goals to become El Tri's all-time top scorer. His goal tally with Mexico stands at 43 goals in 77 games.

  • Chicharito broke his personal record of 21 goals in a single season during the recently concluded campaign. He scored 26 goals for Bayer Leverkusen in all competitions.

Chicharito is expected to lead Mexico's attack during the 2016 Copa América Centenario.
