Las Águilas will host the league leaders with their sights set on returning to a Liga MX final. Will Los Rayados allow them to do so?

The Mexican Clausura 2016 tournament enters its semi-final stage, and the top four teams will be looking for a spot in the title match between Wednesday and Sunday. The most exciting tie includes league leader Monterrey, a team that will try to avenge their semi-final defeat against América three years ago, which started a golden age for the yellow-and-blue side.

Another element of controversy will be the return of coach Antonio Mohamed to Estadio Azteca. The Argentine coach led Las Águilas to their last Liga MX title in 2014, and his departure from the team was fueled by América's refusal to extend his contract despite winning the tournament.

Club América

The hosts get to this match after defeating their bitter rival Guadalajara last Sunday. Goals by Osvaldo Martínez and Oribe Peralta led Ignacio Ambriz's crew to safety, despite conceding an early goal.

For this match, the Mexico City-based team will have all of its top guns available, including captain Rubens Sambueza, who missed the second leg due to a red card.

This will be América's 31st semi-final tie in the domestic tournament. Las Águilas have only won 13 of those, including three of their most recent four.

Monterrey

Los Rayados won the first place of the Clausura 2016 tournament by a mile, showing their skills and quite an explosive attack. The team from Nuevo León gets to this semi-final tie in high spirits after defeating their neighbour Tigres in another edition of their state's derby.

Coach Antonio Mohamed will have all of his players available for this match. His goalkeeper, Jonathan Orozco, missed a couple of training sessions prior to their trip to Mexico City, but he is expected to start the game against Las Águilas.

Monterrey's semi-final record includes eight semi-final series, winning six of those. Nevertheless, Los Rayados have lost their most recent semi-final ties against América, one in the 2013 Clausura tournament, and the other one in the 2014 Apertura. América ended up winning the championship both times.

Head to head

América and Monterrey delivered one of the best games of the regular season a few weeks ago, when their Week 16 match ended with a 3-3 draw. Monterrey took an early lead, América fought back to make it 2-1, but Los Rayados seemed to make the most out of the match by taking a 3-2 lead with only ten minutes left. Finally, América's midfielder Daniel Guerrero scored the equalizer, hinting that this tie will be as exciting as that game.
