La Verde will at least try to repeat their performance from last year, when they reached the Quarter finals for the first time in six Copa América outings. Here’s a quick look at how the green side’s shaping up for the continental tournament.

Bolivia’s National Team showed better form during the 2015 Copa América, where they made it to the knockout stages against all odds. Nevertheless, a series of problems inside the Bolivian Football Federation forced them to part ways with coach Mauricio Soria. Former striker Julio César Baldivieso will now try to pick up the pieces and rebuild the 2018 CONMEBOL WCQs' ninth-placed team.

The struggle will be a tough one for "La Verde" who are up against Chile, Argentina and Panamá in Group D of the Copa America Centenario.

Bolivia’s Copa América record

Not much can be said about Bolivia's performance in the tournament. They've won the competition only once before (1963). The Bolivian crew only managed to reach another final in 1997, when Brazil defeated them after an excruciating penalty shootout. Los Bolivianos then had to win until last year to qualify for the knockout stages as they took advantage of their draw against Mexico and their victory against Ecuador to seal a spot among the tournament’s eight best teams.

Bolivia’s current form

Following their 3-1 defeat against Perú in the continental tournament a year ago, coach Mauricio Soria stepped down as the team’s tactician, forcing the Bolivan Football Federation to appoint Julio César Baldivieso as their new boss. The team’s run has been extremely disappointing. They've picked up six defeats out of their seven matches. This includes a 7-0 blowout against Argentina in a friendly match.

Julio César Baldivieso’s profile

During his playing days, Bolivia’s new coach was one of the most respected footballers in the country. He was part of the generation that played the 1994 World Cup, adding to his resume a silver medal in the 1997 Copa América held in Bolivia. However, his stint as manager hasn’t been as shiny as his career once was. Baldivieso won his only trophy as coach in 2008 while in charge of local side Aurora.

The ex-striker played 85 games for Bolivia, scoring 15 goals back in the '90s.

Bolivia’s Copa América Centenario roster

Julio César Baldivieso called up 40 players for the continental tournament, but one of his key players decided not to show up due to differences with the team’s management. Striker Marcelo Martins Moreno, by far the best Bolivian player these days, declined all invitations to join Bolivia’s National Team after coach Baldivieso criticized his players following a 7-0 loss against Argentina.

With that in mind, all of Bolivia’s chances will be based on what midfielders Jhasmani Campos and Walter Veizaga can produce, considering they are the most talented players for the team in green.

Goalkeepers: Carlos Lampe (Sport Boys), Rómel Quiñónez (Bolívar), Guillermo Viscarra (Oriente Petrolero).

Defenders: Marvin Bejarano (Oriente Petrolero), Nelson Cabrera (Bolívar), Diego Bejarano (The Strongest), Mario Saavedra (Bolívar), Edward Zenteno (Wilstermann), Ronald Eguino (Bolívar), Luis Gutiérrez (Hapoel Ironi Kiryat Shmona).

Midfielders: Pedro Azogue (Oriente Petrolero), Wálter Veizaga (The Strongest), Jhasmani Campos (Kazma FC), Martín Smedberg Dalence (IFK Goteborg), Fernando Saucedo (Wilstermann), Samuel Galindo (Petrolero), Cristhian Machado (Wilstermann), Alejandro Meleán (Oriente Petrolero), Raúl Castro (The Strongest).
